Circumcision is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in males. Approximately 13.3 million men worldwide are circumcised each year.

Circumcision is performed primarily for three different indications:
After critical examination, however, one must now conclude that circumcision cannot be attributed any medical benefit in improving genital hygiene, reducing the incidence of urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, or cancer prevention. Circumcision is medically indicated only in cases of pathologically acquired phimosis, after all available conservative treatment options have failed. However, there is a not insignificant rate of perioperative and postoperative complications, ranging between 2% and 10%.

Circumcision is also associated with long-term anatomical, sexual, and psychological consequences. Although the latter are difficult to investigate, circumcision certainly cannot be dismissed as a harmless and inconsequential procedure. There are numerous reports of the negative consequences of circumcision for both the patient and their sexual partners, and scientific evidence is accumulating regarding the negative impact of circumcision on the sexuality of men and their partners.

Circumcision is performed primarily for three different indications:
- For medical reasons in the presence of pathological phimosis.
- For religious or socio-cultural reasons.
- Finally, in Anglo-Saxon countries, circumcision in newborns was practiced as so-called routine circumcision. While this practice has been completely abandoned in Great Britain and New Zealand, and has declined sharply in Canada and Australia, 55% of all male newborns are still routinely circumcised in the USA.
