Been picking up chess in the past few months as a hobby to kill time. I think it's really funny how my parents approve of this as a hobby for me over vidya when it's the exact same thing. Spending a whole day watching yt tutorials on chess and studying games is supposedly so much of a better use of a time than doing the same for vidya.

It's even more of a waste of time then vidya because you need to dedicate your life to getting any good at chess

Probably because it gives more social opportunities since it's a popular game. Technically it's no different from grinding in videogames, but the same goes for musical instruments etc.
