Today is the 1 year mark since I bought a guitar (a year ago I thought it would help me appear more romantic JFL)

Since that day, I have rarely touched the thing and it's been collecting dust. My family keeps making fun of me for it.

I know I'm not going to be good from the get-go, but does anyone have any suggestions on how they keep up with hobbies or instruments that require effort? Music is something that genuinely makes me happy in this world and I'd like to be able to produce it or play some of my favorite songs.

Do you wait until your family is out of the house to play? Do you do it on weekends? Set time slots?

I practiced religiously every single day to become somewhat decent but not expert at it, i would say is pretty difficult to achieve a good level above the average

Even 3rd worlders in some shack with bright LED lights and blue plaster walls can play smoke on the water, you're not gonna let some shitskin Filipino play better than you right?

How long did it take to get over the initial hurdle where you're just plucking chords to being about to somewhat strum a song

I've played the violin for 14 years. If you're struggling with motivation just watch YouTube videos and play songs you actually enjoy.

Acoustic or electric? What songs are you looking to play?

Only way to truly improve is by practicing for a good amount of time persistently (30mins or more every day with minimal exceptions). Also, focus on mastering basic songs/techniques rather than sloppily playing more complex stuff. A teacher is good, of course, but if you don't have the money/availability, Songsterr is a pretty good site for learning songs

I have an electric and usually practice unplugged or using headphones with my amp as I dislike others hearing my playing.

Learn theory and unlock the fretboard

I feel you. Have a hard time staying consistent too. I try to treat practice like an appointment, i put it in my calendar. But it doesn't always work tbh.

I started playing guitar in 2021. I plahed it everyday until 2024.

Its nothing impressive but i learned on or two things. Thats me here :

The secret to play everyday is to learn easy songs that u enjoy. It cant be too difficult because you will get bored and it cant be a song that u dont like otherwhise because you will lose motivation.

Play full songs that you love.

Like a couple of months at least for simple songs, slightly more for songs that use barre chords

Thank you for the inspiration, I might upload videos to keep myself in check
