Yeah. The turn based combat turns me off as well
I tried playing it years ago (I even came back to it once or twice to give it another chance, which is rare for me to do) I played almost 10 hours of it and I just could not figure out why it was so beloved.

If you just want to experience the story Persona 5: The Animation is actually a pretty solid adaptation. JRPGs are for a specific kind of person, much like comedy anime for example.

Is it the turn-based combat itself that bothers you? Or the dungeons/palaces? Persona games tend to be 70% story. Mainline Shin Megami Tensei games are better if pure gameplay is what you seek.

Still, you were curious enough about why people liked it to give it a second chance. Who knows, maybe one day you will understand. Sometimes a thing you initially hate can end up being a favourite once it finally clicks with you. On the other hand it can also be deeply rewarding to understand exactly why you hate something.

Turn based combat is very hit or miss for me. I liked expedition 33 and like a dragon but personas felt too boring to me

I actually love the Persona series, but I can see why people wouldn't like it. If you're not a hardcore fucking weeb (like me), then the franchise just isn't for you which is fine.
