The way I interpret religion is that community is a big part of why people start to believe.
The desire for belonging is so strong within us, that if belonging ment you had to say "I believe Jesus walked on water", you would say so.
But today that community isn't there anymore, there is mostly just old people going to church.
So there is no incentive for younger people to say they believe in those things.

If you do not conceive of death as a natural part of life, you will have no reason to cope over death, which is religion in a nutshell.

For example, the way that old people in Japan die lonely in their apartments without anybody caring for them is hardly conducive to organized religion. Or, for that matter, old people being "cared" for in American nursing homes. Their deaths are sequestered from the daily lives of those around them.

During the Covid pandemic, hundreds if not thousands of people died in nursing homes around me, but it hardly affected anyone's thoughts.
