I believe that other factors, such as foreign intervention and economic disparity, need to be taken into account. Regarding the latter, it is no coincidence that the first republics to secede from Yugoslavia were Slovenia and Croatia, which were relatively wealthy and lost their fiscal revenue to the federal government. But yes, this coincided with the Slovene/Croat nationalist view that southerners were backwards and Oriental.

Actually no, not similar religion: The Serbs, Montenegrins and North Macedonians were Eastern Orthodox Christians, The Croats and Slovenians were Catholic (who are in schism with the Eastern Orthodox Church) and the Bosniaks and Kosovar were Muslim. While Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Montenegrin are basically the same language, the religious divide was so strong and historically prevalent that it lead to the dissolution of the union.

Bosnia is lowkey one of the worst cases of sectarianism. Despite all that killing in the 80s and 90s, croats, serbs and bosniaks are still very segregated and tensions are very high. Whats worse is, for example Bosnian Serbs are extreme secessionists and their allegiance is to Serbia more than Bosnia, so as a result the serbian government has always aided them with arms which gives them legitimacy and supreme reign.
