I'm not encouraging anybody to take the "islampill" But have any of you considered religion? I tried religion myself. But it ends up being too Beta for me. But I only really got involved in mainline conservative white bread protestant Christianity.
I was considering orthodoxy when I was 16 but Philosophy has done quite a lot to discourage me from engaging in the church. Basically, I can't worship a God that demands to be worshipped all the time. I used to be a atheist edge. Lord when I was 18. Yes, I too have been religion curious and particularly Islam curious (Wahabism especially) for a long time. That being said, I find that the arguments for belief in a theistic God and the corpus of religious texts in which their dogma consist entirely unconvincing on an intellectual level and as such, I can't ascribe much moral authenticity to their claims. I have been an atheist for most of my adult life and I came to that unbelief precisely because I couldn't reconcile the claims of organized religion with what I understood to be true about the world through my own reliance on empiricism, the scientific method and a more factually intensive and intellectually rigorous scrutiny of our place in the cosmos. Likewise, I am above all else, a materialist and it seems to me that one cannot accept the highly doubtful claims of religion concerning the metaphysical realm and likewise have any grounding in a clear and rational understanding of the physical world.
All of that being said, I have come to the conclusion that most people need religion to imbue them with a sense of moral duty and ethical responsibility vis-à-vis their fellow humans, as you yourself have adroitly observed above. Some people are wise enough, disciplined enough and learned enough to transcend the moral constraints which religion superimposes on our existence and navigate the travails of this life for themselves based on their own subjective conception of how they ought to act and what they ought to do when confronted with moral choices. Nietzsche introduced this concept when he spoke of his proverbial ubermensch.
And as to your analogizing the contemporary US with the Soviet Union, I see the point that you're making but I just don't think that analogy works the way you want it to at least regarding the moral degeneracy of our culture since the USSR was an extremely conservative, reactionary state which was lorded over by old white Russian WW2 veterans and thus the apotheosis of patriarchy. Likewise, there was a collective sense of public morality and personal shame which served to restrain people from indulging in the sorts of hedonic and depraved personal pursuits which our own materialistic culture both encourages and extols as somehow virtuous.
