It's just amazing how true it is. They don't seem to think about the long-term consequences of their actions or about any kind of deep morality... they just do whatever feels good in the moment. There's very little self-discipline.

Not that men are devoid of these shortcomings, but when in groups we tend to be able to build societies that successfully overcome them, I guess because a) they're less prominent in us and b) we have higher average intelligence.

It's because virtuous men institute justice over men who lack virtue, and force them to behave in a civilized manner. There are no virtuous women to do the same when women have power, and even if they were, their in-group preference would forbid them to do anything to inconvenience their own kind.
