China famously was prone to famines. Perhaps in response to these periods of scarcity, chinks occasionally feasted on less conventional and paltable perishable food items and it slowly became a tradition even in times which weren't as strapped for nutritional resources.

It's true. In Sardinia they eat raw cheese with maggots in them, called Casu Marzu. In France they also eat alot of raw foods, snails oysters and stuff.
The problem is that modern europeans have been removed from their natural cuisine. So most europeans prefer junk food over natural food now.

French mainly but also parts of spain and Italy. Soupe de vipère(Viper soup) is thr first dish that comes to mind.
