Because the West is in a weird cultural moment where everyone acts like a few years here and there are a massive difference between people and interacting between ages is basically like prey and predators speaking together, while much more substantive differences are undiscussed. My theory is that people are focusing on it because talking about stuff like socioeconomic status or race, which actually have massive, lifelong effects on people's life outcomes, makes people uncomfortable, so they overcompensate by talking about barely relevant stuff like age.
