Most corporations have billions of dollars in debt, so why shouldn’t a government be able to take out debt as long as it invests it into productive ventures like infrastructure, education and health?

Debt becomes a problem when the cost of servicing the debt starts to impact on other things.
During covid, my country paid everyone who asked, 80% of their wages to stay at home while we were locked down.
So in one term of the government that did that, we went from having reasonably manageable public debt, to now the interest on our public debt costs more each year than our public health system.
