In the late 2010s (my high school years) it very much felt like people were boxed into following nigculture; I think this 2000s revival shit that's happened in the 2020s is just a reaction to that. The 2000s (and early 2010s) were the last years in which uniquely white subcultures (emo, prep, valley girl, etc.) existed, hence this craze for wanting to "return" to it
