Mario Kart 7 and Wii were decent online because the item balancing wasn't absolutely horrible and there were exploits around getting hit by a blueshell.
MK8 online is one of the most unfun and rage inducing experiences I've endured. The blue shell is the least offensive item in it. There's so many bullshit items that target you just got playing well, and some retard turned off the cool down times on certain powerful items so it's ridiculously easy to get molested by a bullet bill.
I ended up intentionally playing bad in 8 so I could get a bullet bill, and then on the third round catching up to 4th place and using it. That's how horrible the item balancing was. That was my primary strategy and the reason I quit. Intentionally playing bad so you can get good items is not fun.
Why would you want to play a game of chance online? I don't even want to know how bad World is. It's no doubt been streamlined even more do there's no skill required at all.
