It depends. When I was in high school, many years ago, a lot of the stoners and "indie" kids thought they were too cool for the senior prom. I remember going to one of my friend's houses on prom night with two of my only five friends in school at the time and we drank beer and smoked weed while playing GoldenEye on the N64 until 4 AM which was one of the best nights I ever had.
In retrospect, I heard some interesting news about prom night at my high school. As the prom started at ten, some freshman kid had apparently called in a bomb threat at ten-thirty, so the FBI spent nearly an hour and a half looking for it, which it turns out had been a hoax and since the kid had called it in from his home phone, he had been caught right away.
By the time they confirmed it was a hoax, it was nearly twelve, so the school basically refunded everybody's tickets and made the kids go home.
I did not end up missing anything after all.
