I've heard different eras such as the 1890s and 1920s or somewhere around there but I want a more precise date if possible.
 
It didn't happen in one particular year, but over a period of years. I would say that consumer culture has its roots in the late 19th century and gradually emerged more and more over several decades before it became fully recognizable by the 1950s.
 
Whenever mass production techniques allowed for the increased supply of consumer goods and the economy grew enough for the average income to have sufficient disposable money for purchasing frivolous mundane products.
