He's meant to be a flawed character, kishimoto intended for him to be super gray and for his reception to be a mixed bag. But to retard fans he goes from black to white after the reveal because of how emotionally it is presented. He's one of the most misunderstood naruto characters. .Honestly I've mellowed out my opinion on Itachi, I used to call him a cuck, but it was counter signalling all the love he gets more than a fair read on the character. He was traumatized due to seeing the consequences of war at a young age. So young it was probably fair that he wanted to avoid it at all costs.

Sure he never loses a fight, but he has completely failed at life. As danzo pointed out, and as sasuke stated at the final valley, by letting the truth about himself leak out, he let hatred spred. Leaving sasuke alive was his biggest mistake. He failed and cursed sasuke to be a loner filled with nothing but hatred. Only as an edo does he fix some of his mistakes by laying his trust in naruto and telling sasuke that he no longer wishes to force him down a certain path, and that he will love him no matter what kind of person he ends up being.
Yeah I can see him being annoying but I've seen people define him as an edgelord when he has the most natural development in the whole show.
