Blanchards typology divides MtF troons to two types: 1) HSTS, Homosexual transsexuals, and 2) AGP autogynephiles.
Homosexual transsexuals are the types of troons that may even look passable. These men are typically very feminine since birth, and homosexuals, and they have wagered that their lives will be easier if they present themselves as women.
Autogynephiles are the majority of MtF troons. For these people their sexual attraction towards women has been "inverted." They are attracted to the woman they create out of themselves.
The same way some people have weird fetishes about amputees, theres a small subsection of those people who want to get an amputation. This happens when there is a target location error in what you find sexually attractive. In the case of autogynephiliacs, who at their heart are heterosexual men and their target of attraction is women, but like in the case of those wackos that want to get amputations, these men want to become women. These men usually crossdress and they want to present themselves as women because this gives them sexual gratification.
The average troon is an autogynephiliac, not a HSTS, mind you. For them the whole trans movement is about their kink. They want everyone to indulge in their weird autogynephiliac fetish play.
There are very few autoandrophiliacs (FtM) simply because women do not find men to be that attractive. Very very few, at least compared to MtFs.
