Scientists do understand the benefit of sexual reproduction though. Asexual reproduction typically results in a genetically identical clone of the parent unless mutation occurs. This leads to very slow rates of evolution, as minimal genetic differences are present between generations (hence there are fewer chances for good traits/good trait combinations to form). This works for some species' survival (eg. if they are able to reproduce at a rapid rate so that positive mutations occur commonly, or if they exist in a stable environment with few selection pressures which doesn't necessitate rapid evolution), but human evolution has necessitated genetic variation in order for the species to survive, therefore sexual reproduction is favourable and has persisted.
