Title. I was watching a video by F.D. Signifier, and he was talking about incels. He got us all wrong, as he usually does, but his takes on African American culture I absolutely agree with, so I still consume his content in a semi-regular basis. He mentioned something in a video a while back, about how “masculinity isn’t a hard term, and means a totally different thing from person to person” and honestly I agree. I’ve asked a few different people what they think masculinity is and they say totally different stuff. Me personally, I believe that masculinity having a penis, in the physical sense. In the mental sense, it’s to be able to handle your business as efficiently as possible, being patient, understanding, willing to become wiser by the day, etc. What do you guys think?

I don't think asking random individuals for their opinion is a good way to understand masculinity, given that we lost all notion of what it is when humans became sedentary.

Before sedentarization, masculinity could be defined by concrete adaptive roles such as physical strength, the ability to defend the group, endurance in hunting, etc.

After sedentarization, some of these roles lost their immediate necessity. Masculinity then took on social representations and symbolic figures such as Andrew Tate, which no longer always correspond to natural pressures but to collective constructs.


A better test would be to place men and women on a desert island and see how the different roles define themselves naturally.

To answer what masculinity means, I would point you first to this post and then to my reply a bit further down. Both express my view on the matter clearly.

As for whether it matters, I would say only insofar as those who live by it make it matter. Masculinity sets certain expectations, and most men measure themselves against those expectations whether they admit it or not. If a man fails to meet them, he feels lesser, whether by weakness, by want of discipline, or by lack of respect from others. If he meets them, he gains a sense of standing. In that sense, masculinity matters because it decides much of how men see themselves and how they are seen.
