I never watched it fully when it came out, because I didn't care. I saw a few episodes here and there but it didn't click with me. Now I watched it and as expected, it's trash. Not complete trash, but 85-90% of the time trash. When I think things are looking up for a moment, it always leads to a letdown. The positives are few, here they are:
1. The animation has stepped up and became more consistent compared to the AtLA. Some will say yes it's expected from it being more recent, but all in all it's a plus.
2. The action scenes have become more reasonable and thought out. No more insane jumps from non-benders and magical clinging to the walls.
3. Some of the villains, namely Amon, Tarrlok and Zaheer, have cool concepts (that were not realized but more about that in the next section).
And that's where the good parts end. I don't know how to arrange this in the order of importance, it's kind of all important.
1. First of all, the animation has improved yes, but characters look less cartoonish and anime like because of their facial proportions. Yes, it's subjective.
2. The action scenes again, saw some work but at the same time lost their juiciness and became more tame. Less magnitude, less passion, less fun. In the first season half of it is just pro-bending, where everything is fake and stakes are non-existent. Although it does improve somewhat, it fails to captivate you as much.
3. One of the biggest complaints is that everyone is a side character in this cartoon. Bolin, Mako, Asami, list goes on. Almost all of them are fucking jobbers, speaking in pro-wrestling terms. They just take space and function, but that's about them. None of them truly thrills or captivates you. None on the level of Zuko, Azula, Sokka, Toph, etc. Korra, albeit not as much of an arrogant cunt as I first imagined, is not fun to watch. I don't care what happens to her, her struggles don't feel real. I didn't even care that much that she led Bolin on and turned to faggotry. Because I wasn't invested in the first place, I didn't want to watch her succeed or fail. Let it all just happen.
4. The lack of strategic planning in the plot is agonizing. Each season they come up with a new thing and fail to build a grand narrative behind it. First it's blood bending, then the spirit world, then another spiritual thing, then suddenly a power greedy warlord cunt. And it magically comes together in the end? It doesn't. The final Korra's monologue about how she had to suffer to better understand the bad guy, I didn't get what the fuck she was talking about. Like Unalaq was just a big bad meanie, he couldn't have any redemption arc. Zaheer was a maniac who didn't get what he deserved (I guess Korra lost the ability to take bending away after he poisoned her?). Kuvira, sure. But Amon was just done away with without closure, nobody even knew what happened to him.
5. They keep introducing new characters and plot lines and don't know what to do with them. The worst case is of course Amon and Tarrlok, who were simply necked offscreen. Likewise, the water tribe twins who I thought had some potential, were neutered pretty quick. Then appeared in a couple of scenes, then gone. Sad and disappointed. Eska is unironically the best girl.
6. The incompetence of characterization is unceasing and happens on all levels. Like take this Zhu Li girl, the Varrick's assistant as an example. First they do nothing with her for two seasons, then suddenly she gets a personality? And stands up to Varrick to what end exactly? Not even talking about how she's voiced by three different people? They literally change her voice actress within a few moments at one time. What a joke. Then she and Varrick marry in a traditional western style, hello? Like with everything else in this moronic ordeal of a cartoon, the pacing is wrong, the build up is fucked, and the pay off isn't there! Half-baked, heavy-handed, cooked-up-in-the-last-minute bunch of nonsense.
7. Each time they brought back old characters from AtLA, I wanted to throw up. Because everything was handled in the manner of tasteless fan service. Like the appearance of Iroh in the spirit world, for him to talk some forgettable crap. I don't like Iroh the person, but (almost) each of his appearances in the AtLA were memorable and served a purpose. Zuko is equally cheap and useless, get out of my sight.
8. The altering of the status-quo in the second season. Why? So that the incompetent writers don't run out of things to explore. And to top it all with a couple of retcons, because they can't just live with the consequences.
9. The last season was simply awful, and gave me so much pain. I mean, the first one is quite bad. But it's because it had a difficult task of introducing the world, the characters, give some explanations and was too short of time. But the final one didn't have to be so atrocious. And in fact, it made me change my final opinion from "serviceable for what it is" to "almost unwatchable". I wanted to make a separate thread just about it, but I'm more than a decade too late to delve into that, nobody cares lol. Korra healing by removing the residual poison? But wait, it's not poison, it's some mental block! Zaheer who helps Korra, despite almost killing her? And what does he do again, to restore her abilities?
10. The cartoon features an alarming rate of older women with a deep raspy voice, like ten of them? If you are not into that kind of thing and are sensitive proceed with caution while watching, take breaks or something. Trust me, at first you think it's nothing but it will add up and get to you.
11. The blatant pederasty scene for an ending was a perfect spit in the face, I have to give them that. But I was relieved somewhat by the fact they didn't make out in front of everyone at that wedding party. That would have been on another level. Oh no I don't care how well or bad it's written (very bad). I won't hear any of faggot shit in my media.
