I never experienced them either, first hand, but since I am so interested in IT, music and consumer electronics the 80s to me are where it's all really started, for the most part.
The 80s have this unique retro futuristic and optimistic vibe to them. The 90s to me are the start of 3D gaming, mainly, and also the best yesrs of it.

The UK is a diverse place even if it is small. 1980s and 90s Northern Ireland where I live was a grim place. It was towards the end of the troubles when there was constant tit for tat shootings between unionist and nationalist terror groups. There was constant daily check points on the roads from police and soldiers.
