Its weather radar on airliners, but the principle is the same. Doppler radars prevent the return of clutter by registering only moving targets (thus there is a difference in time signal sent, and signal return)

Early radars (before AESA/PESA) relied on rotating the dish to search and track a target; although some AESA radars may also incorporate radar dish moving to widen the range that it can track/search targets.

This type of radar, also called a 2D radar, only supports scanning what's in front of the plane, maximum scan/track is +90 and -90 degrees (assuming top is 0deg and left is -90deg and right is 90deg)

The slot like radar is a modern phased array, unlike the inverted cone shaped ones.
