If Ukraine hadn't had Donbas and Crimea, it would never have found itself in such a predicament.
Instead of joining NATO and the EU in the 1990s and early 2000s, Ukraine was caught between the diametrically opposed populations of western Ukraine and eastern Ukraine, which were predominantly vatniks. As a result, Ukraine suffered greatly.
Even now, I don't understand the intensity of the current struggle for the territory of the East. Yes, you don't have Crimea and Donbas, but you also don't have millions of vatniks who would vote against NATO and the EU.
