Honestly book smarts are different from actual intelligence. Intelligence in my book relates to problem solving, pattern recognition, and logical thinking, while book smarts relate towards the ability to memorize. In the former three categories, he is seemingly substandard.
He might have been smart in school, but at the end of the day, he's just another midwit IQ retard who happened to do good in school, but wasn't really intelligent at all. This was a thing in my school too. There were a few "smart" kids who made absolutely retarded decisions like doing drugs and getting in with the wrong crowd, and eventually they became burnouts. While I know a few people who dropped out of school or did poorly in school but have generally extremely exceptional intelligence and are very logical.

So basically the shooter did not plan out his escape at all beyond going to his parents' house.
