The 2 means you have to square the time it took and this along with multiplying the equation by 0.5 gives us the distance. What you originally calculated was the velocity.

Basically if you want to find distance from a free fall, the equation is distance = 0.5 x 9.8 (acceleration) x time in seconds (so In this case, 3) and then square this number to get the distance. In this case it would be 44.1 meters

I think you used the velocity formula which is velocity = 9.8 x time. This would equal 29.43
