I'm not sure if this is just in the games I play but... I'm in my 30s so I love my retro shooters 
But... where are the Dukes and the Doomguys and stuff? Not that they don't exist but they seem less common.
These two games are excellent but I'm just missing actually playing a tough male character as opposed to a female. Also in the second game she has some really weak bf, who is an alien but still! Kind of... irritating!

EDIT -- Having said all that, this game looks epic too but I just don't really want to splash £20 on it right now!

I do think the "powers that be" want guys (especially white guys) to see themselves as inherently bad in some way.
Cool role models would make that harder to do.
