if someone truly wants something and self-improvement was the only way to get it, the work and effort required to improve themselves would never discourage them, they would be ready to sacrifice anything and everything to self-improve in order to attain their wants and fulfill their desires.
Only when someone realises that self-improvement is not possible for them due to the limitations of their genetics and environment, when they realise that there is nothing they can do to change their situation, only then do they give up on their wants. Nobody gives up so easily.
So for someone to give up, it means they have already tried or that they know that self-improvement is highly unlikely for them to achieve, that’s why they don’t bother in trying to self-improve and just accept their situation.
