Back in 2016, I aced an essay thanks to this short documentary. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu is important, because it marked the start of the Vietnam War. The French imperialist (invading soldiers from another country seeking to grow their empire) were defeated by the communist North Vietnamese guerrilla (small independent group) soldiers.
The French imperialist go crying to the Americans for help with the pesky communist North Vietnamese. That is one reason why Americans stereotype the French as cowards. The Americans realized there were a lot rubber plantations and other business interests that were at danger of being absorbed by the communist (belief in a one party state ran by workers in theory). If the communist Vietnamese, the Viet Minh in the north and the Viet Cong insurgents (rebels) in the south, took over the south part of the country - the Americans feared China and the Soviet Union would grow more powerful. So, the Americans went into Vietnam. The Vietnam War lasted from 1955 to 1975 (20 years).
