Competition is so ridiculous that even in the most meaningless and weirdest places, competition is still crazy. For example, even on a runescape private server, I managed to find this way of making good in-game money where I'd use a vpn service's free trial to get votes that give you in-game money. But noooo, of course not even this silly thing can be free of competition. Now I can't even do this cause every vpn's ip has already been voted from. And other methods of making money are bullshit hard too, cause even on god damn private servers shit has to be hard.

This is EXACTLY what happened in Europe after the black plague. Despite what people think, during the Middle Ages overpopulation was kind of a problem, all the land was owned by someone be it nobles, the king or the church, and work was usually done by serfs who didn't even get to own land, they just had the right to work it. They didn't get paid in money, they got to keep SOME of the food they grew.

Then a third of the labour force died pretty much overnight, and suddenly the church and nobles needed people to work their lands. But since there were much fewer workers, they were able to negotiate better working terms and that started the transition into being paid an actual wage.
