I can't comment on addiction or the safety of the children of the past, but I would agree that morals were very different. At least psychopathic and cynical behaviors weren't rewarded as much as they are today. I'm not sure if that morality was inherent, though. Now, we are exposed to a huge amount of data from which you could trace patterns to exploit the population. But that isn't considered psychopathic or immoral by most, and yet they keep complaining about the "dissolution of morality" in society.
