The Wii being graphically inferior is what allowed Nintendo to put out so many great games so rapidly. (Third party companies as well)
If the Wii were HD then development times would've significantly slowed down and we would have received less classics as teams would be forced to adapt to the superior hardware.
You look at a game like Super Mario Galaxy and compare it to 3d world or Odyssey and it's clear that the later hd games have less creativity and diversity in their set pieces and level design.
One of the reasons why Nintendo and other companies have shifted into making more open world games is because it's much easier to make an open world game filled with copy and pasted content then make linear HD game filled with constant new set pieces and gimmicks.
A game like Mario Galaxy couldn't easily be made today. I predict Mario Galaxy 3 will be open world or sandbox just because the amount of time it would take to create a game like Mario Galaxy with higher fidelity graphics.
