When Kirk was first assassinated, I had a pretty mixed reaction. For one, I never particularly cared about the guy, so I didn't actually feel any remorse for him dying. I did, however, start to realize that if they killed Kirk, they'd absolutely kill us if it wasn't inconvenient to them. Not only that, they'd probably cheer and rejoice. We really are alone as a community and you can't trust anyone outside of it. I'm not saying that you'll get killed per se, but people will absolutely throw you under the bus and treat you as less than human, and you shouldn't expect anything else.
