Theory The IT Crowd was the last truly great British comedy?

Since then there have been some great shows with comedic elements, like Inside No 9. Or continuations of older shows like Peep Show or Red Dwarf.

Fresh Meat was a good show but I don't think I'd call it a great comedy. It's pretty good.

I dunno if anyone else here can think of anything. Maybe I'm forgetting some, idk.

Personally I don't like The Inbetweeners but... it is at least an actual comedy and a lot of people do like it.

Mrs Brown's Boys is also 2011 and even though I don't find it super funny it was popular and is... kind of a proper old-fashioned sitcom and I really like that about it

Culture war bs has made it hard to make great comedies since the mid-2010s. Succession is very much in the vibe of a British comedy due to its writing staff and cast. It’s satirizing rich and powerful people, so it gets to jab at people from both sides of the political spectrum.

I’m American, so it’s hard to watch British comedies, but I like the shows mentioned here: Peep Show, Inbetweeners, and Freshmeat. Freshmeat is actually the newest British comedy I’ve actually watched to completion.

Also, while not exclusively British, Todd Margaret is a funny American/British production that deserves more credit.

Interesting how both of these shows I've mentioned are actually Irish. Well, one is Irish and one technically Northern Irish.

I wonder if that's coincidence or whether over there they managed to hang on to classic comedy for a bit longer. I'm not sure about now in 2026.
