Man, the 90s were crazy. Even the dorky ex-Soviet satellite states with barely any thug culture went wild then and are still traumatized by that period. From what I've read from accounts of Russians themselves, it was basically like the entire society just hard reset itself and everyone just regressed to the most basic instincts. There were thugs going around beating up anyone who strayed into an unfamiliar area, even if they were from just a few streets over or so, and other stuff like that.

Absolutely. They've barely reacted to Venezuela and seem ready to leave Iran to dry, but I can't see them giving up on their most prestigious "partner", if only for all the natural resources.

Absolutely. They've barely reacted to Venezuela and seem ready to leave Iran to dry, but I can't see them giving up on their most prestigious "partner", if only for all the natural resources.

The 1990s were the best time in Russia's history. There had never been such a level of freedom of speech, and there would never be again. The president could be insulted on TV without going to prison, something that had never happened under the tsars or the communists. Most importantly, social mobility was maximized. People are so influenced by Putin's propaganda that they are ready to demonize the 1990s, although under Putin, you can be sentenced to 15 years in prison for any comment on social media, you can be literally caught and sent to war, and a drone can fly into your home. In other words, life has become more dangerous than it was in the 1990s.
