It's actually quite sad and terrifying when you think about it. Most people are basically the philosophical zombie (look it up, it you're curious) and are driven solely by their programming and instinct. The words that come out of their mouths don't even do a once-over. They're conditioned responses that are tailored to increase their survivability in their environments. This is why so many NPCs just blindly repeat what they hear on from others or on the news and talk as if they cogently formed the thoughts that processed the string of words outputted from their vocal orifices.
