During my time as I've said the tall guys were always popular, followed by facially good looking kids with acceptable heights. This was the general trend however you do see people get lucky decently often.

An ugly hapa was popular in my area just by being on a sports team and close with the tall white kids. However he was athletic.

It does on high school (depending on which one obviously) it also depends on the country, in japan for example it is much more important. It is also coupled to doing good in regional competitions (if any), having a trophy with your name displayed on school grounds gives you status.
I also remember going to a math competition in which the first 3 prices were scholarships for some university, I got the 2nd place and suddenly everybody was talking to me... even got a free ride home with someone else instead of having to pay for a taxi.
Also status doesn't mean girls want you sexually speaking, it only means a group admires you and respects you.
