I try to really listen when a friend is hurting.

Just shut up, let him vent.

It's also hard to get intelligent two way connections.

People rarely listen to me back.

Much less get that I think through things before I talk

Yeah, everyone's quick to use me as their dump, but I can never count on anyone else to ever let me hold power in a relationship, if even for a moment. I'm also always interrupted and forced to talk a mile a minute because no one wants to listen to me.

As for lack of intelligent conversations, methinks that's a problem endemic to humanity.

Just listening, and occasionally repeating back what you're hearing, in a succinct form, lets them know you empathyze.
