I've never played 1 so I can't share my thoughts on it. However, I did play a bit of 2 and 3 and I have to say that these are by far the most overrated horror games when it comes to their stories. Both of them can be summarized as "man bad."
They're feminist slop.
Silent Hill 2 is about how leh male sexuality is evil and hurts women.
Silent Hill 3 is about leh "horrors" of rape and forced pregnancy.

I can't help but cringe whenever I try to push through them.

I couldn't finish any of the old ones because I hated buildings in those games. Literally entering doors simulator.

Atmosphere and story felt good but gameplay always bored me and I had to stop.

I never cared for their stories and never finished any of the games.
Just played them a bit and dropped them.

I am glad that I've never finished these games, especially not as a kid.

Thank you for the heads up. Glad I didn't even have them on my to play list.
Now I definetely won't add them to my list.

It had a lot of great ideas, like the slowly corrupting apartment, but it’s janky and unpolished. I liked the limited inventory, unkillable ghost- stalker enemies, and Metroidvania-style backtracking. All of that made it feel more like true survival horror compared to the earlier games.
