I agree, went to a friend's wedding once, was very awkward and boring as hell. There were a few people I knew there but it's hard to talk to the same guy for hours. In the end I just played Minecraft in my hotel room (only game I had installed on my laptop). If you don't have to travel far then you could go, just check in with your friend so he knows you were there and then make a quick exit.
