I would take it a step further and say infidelity was always common throughout history. It was just swept under the rug because there was a social stigma attached. But the whole "the milkman is the real father" stereotype didn't come out of thin air. My mom told me MY grandmother (born in 1910s) was fooling around with another guy in our family (a Chad I guess) while married to my grandpa. He was one of his brothers if I remember right. I think she said my grandpa caught them doing something sexual in the back of a pickup truck. And that was probably in the 1940s or 50s. But they stayed married for life, like 60 years.
