I am honestly unsure; my mother is extremely volatile, and while she seems to care about me, she also utters the most hurtful words a parent could tell their own child. I am highly certain she is mentally ill (most likely BPD), which would explain her behavior; regardless of its origin, what she has said and done is unacceptable, and I will never forgive her. If I were to give my best guess, it would be that she does care about me to an extent, but out of hope that I can be of some utility to her, or achieve the idealized image of a son she has conceived of (which is impossible given my circumstances) — so she does not really like me in any meaningful sense, but it is ambivalent.
