Ukrainian army is facing relentless bombing in Novomykhailivka. Even so, the troops are resisting fiercely, knowing the repercussions of abandoning the western part of the locality, which would open the gates for Russian army to reach the main supply route to stronghold Vuhledar which Russians have already failed to capture many times (see my map below).

Land and territory will always matter. Do you think Western countries really need a few millions Moldovans or Latvians in EU? Even if many of them were super specialists ( and they aren't ) this wouldn't change anything.
The main gain for Western countries is access to land itself.
