I mean both suck. But people seem to get struck with a heart attack when their reputation is ruined.
I think it's human nature to know that harsh truths are unavoidable. But the reputation/ how you are perceived is crucial.
We literally get heartbroken when our reputation (artificial/ constructed representation of ourselves) comes down. Which essentially means most people are spiritually wired to be manipulative sociopathic narcissists to some degree. I think we care about function over truth/ or enjoying our life experience based only around ourselves rather than how we affect others... because social navigation/ social manipulation is human nature.
Anyone who says that you're not supposed to orient your value around others is cope.
We do that all the time. It's human nature. We're more narcissistic creatures more specifically than just social creatures.
