Upgraded from a 6700 XT to a 7900 XT and my 7600x CPU has been getting the higher temperatures. After I installed it. I reapplied the thermal paste. I turned the fans on to Max but even still when I'm using cinebench I'm getting 97 Max Celsius which isn't terrible because the target range for the ship is 95 but and used to be lower than that. I heard that since the power draw from the new GPU is way higher than the old one. It's giving out more heat but I've did everything I could to compensate for that. What should I do now?

the GPU could be heating up the case a bunch or the CPU needs to work harder in order to prepare frames for the faster GPU, causing it to reach max temp

Check your psu

Ok. It's weird though because for games like Spider-Man the temps will go high and low. I'm talking 92c to 75c then if I restart it will stay in the 70s. After reapplyijg the thermal paste the temps did get lower for gaming (except for GTA V which will go from 70s to high 80s.) the only thing is that cinebench will still top out max at 97 Celsius. Which ain't terrible since it putting the CPU to the absolute max. I tried under bolting the GPU and that did work.

Undervolt the gpu

At what wattage/settings? I have a pulse sapphire GPU by the way
There are many guides on youtube. You are gonna have to play around with the settings, but the goal is to get the lowest Frequency/Voltage ratio while not causing any significant problems in performance.

Could I undervolt the CPU itself?

Too risky + never heard of anyone doing that. Undervolting the gpu is extremely easy and poses 0 risk since the software blocks you from applying any threatening settings.

Ok I'll give it another go. What GPU do you have by the way?

Strange that a new GPU would cause your CPU to overheat. 7600 didn't do that before? I recall in the Zen 4 launch days, AMD purposely set them to go up to 95C Tjmax for some reason, but soon altered that.

I'm thinking you messed up something with your CPU cooler while installing it. There's nothing that should cause a 7600 to get that hot, even with like the shit AMD stock cooler.

No, that's bad. Undervolt, it's really easy with Ryzen. There's no reason to push these Ryzen CPUs, they scale poorly pushing clocks.

It's an odd thing because the main things are:

- passable cooling
- decent components (in this case especially the mobo, PSU and card itself)
- ample space around the card
- thermal paste that isn't ancient or cheap

I can't think of much else but there might be.

Surprising if it's still overheating despite the PC being built fine.

I reapplied the thermal paste and I screwed in the fan back correctly. I did get lower temps with games. Just not with cinebench

Also idle it's around 38 to 41 Celsius. If I'm playing middle tier games like tales of arise or indie shit it's hovers from 45 to 60 Celsius. And other triple AAA games it will be around high 70s to low 80s. GTA V is where it will shit the bed at times with 88 Celsius

Do you mean undervolt the GPU or CPU?
Both, preferably. I don't know if RDNA 3 undervolts well. CPU definitely, though. Just use Curve Optimizer and use one of many guides out there.

I would also play around with the BIOS and ensure you don't have some setting that lets the board max everything out. Especially if you have an ASUS board, those love cooking. But, that's advanced stuff for nerds like me.

He might have a faulty cpu. You shouldn't even need to undervolt your cpu for acceptable temps. I never knew it was even possible to do that. I thought undervolting was for gpus only.

I doubt that. CPUs rarely malfunction. Failure are usually due to human error breaking pins or most likely the cooler isn't situated properly.

Also, thermal paste doesn't mean that much. You could go without it and it wouldn't raise temps more than like 10C. Don't stress out about applying it perfectly. But, it should be used, obviously.

Send me the 6700xt.

It is a really weird problem tbh, lol

That a processor would overheat because of a graphics card.

Good quality components are essential. Like for example many companies can release cards with the same GPU on them so I make sure to get a good one.

I tend to use official CPU coolers but maybe that's just me being a cheapskate XD

You could try swapping the card for another to see if it's faulty I guess. As in, doing a return with the company for another of the same card.

Deffo a strange problem :)
