While learning about the sexual excesses of these two members of high soyciety, I was struck by how similar their scandals are to contemporary ones in terms of their attempted justifications:
Ted Haggard, an evangelical Christian preacher who was actually a meth-using homosexual, claimed to have visited a male prostitute only for the purposes of procuring a "massage" from him.
In more recent times, this is exactly how Alan Dershowitz has explained his presence at Jeffery Epstein's opulent mansion in New York City -- that he was only there to receive a "massage" from an elderly woman named Olga
John Edwards, a politician who was once a contender for the US presidency, claimed to have cheated on his wife in a strictly limited sense -- during the remission of her cancer, rather than when she was actively dying from it. This was a lie, not to mention an absurd minimization.
And it resembles how Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the US House of Representatives and a presidential contender himself, cheated on his wife when she was dying of cancer. Newt's damage control here was merely to deny the allegation that he had served his wife divorce papers while she was on her deathbed (which is hilarious because that being true would have made him look better by comparison -- making him appear honest, albeit in a callous way -- rather than as the smooth-talking politician playing on your feeble emotions while cheating on you behind your bed-sored back that he really is)
