I remember watching a little bit (maybe like 1 or 2 episodes) of this way back the anime first came out and every imageboard was flooded with it, just to see what the fuss was all about. I really didn't find it interesting. Just from what little I've seen of the anime, and what I've seen from the people who are obsessed with it, I can reverse engineer it down to the creator's original premise: "I'll make an anime where the main character is both waifu-bait and a self-insert for ugly otaku losers".
