Males always subconsiously form hierarchies. If you are too much of a nice guy to your guy friends will subconsciously view you as submissive and would hardly be hanging with you. If you are rude, tough, straightforward no matter how much of an asshole you are they will subconsciously view you as dominant and will always be flocking around you.

Dark triad has most pronounced effect on males.

Yes but no, it depends on looks too. If you're tall and ogre you can be darktriad, ask yourself why so many manlets resort to clownmaxxing. It's because is either that or doom, you can't act tough as a manlet.

And while males don't care that much about looks that also depends on group dinamics, chads/chadlites usually hang around together. Looks determine in which social groups you'll be able to fit in, if you're ugly you'll fit with the nerds/weirds/weeabos.

Looks probably do matter in friendships, but several orders of magnitude less than in dating, and could be made up (unlike sexual attraction).
