Modern indie games never made me curious enough to actually play them. Many have good gameplay, but they offer nothing else. No charm, no personality.
Even when many obscure old games were objectively flawed by today’s standards, they still had soul. There was something authentic about their worlds, their ideas, their feel. Things you just don’t get from most modern indies.
Part of the reason for this is because the devs were influenced by real life. Back then, there wasn’t infinite content to consume. They spent more time outside, hanging out with people, seeing new places, actually living. They drew inspiration from life, emotions, conversations, memories, and random moments that stuck with them, and tried to replicate or improve on them within the limits of the time.
Now, most indie devs are sheltered spergs who never leave the house. Their life experience is basically just playing games and scrolling online. Their games are inspired by another game. That’s why it never feels authentic or original.
I’d rather play some forgotten old game over most modern indie games any day.
