Younger adults show higher levels of Machiavellianism and psychopathy
People often change as they age—but do their darker tendencies shift too? A new study in Deviant Behavior suggests that Machiavellianism and psychopathy tend to decline over adulthood, while narcissism appears to stay relatively steady across the lifespan.
Participants were divided into five age groups: 18–25, 26–35, 36–40, 41–59, and 60 and older. The researchers first compared average scores for each trait across age groups using analysis of variance. They found that Machiavellianism was highest among the youngest adults and declined steadily with age. The difference in Machiavellianism scores between the youngest and oldest groups was large.
This lines up with what I've observed for a long time. Young people, especially young men are hypercompetitive and have a "I must win at all costs" mentality. This mentality quickly leads to machiavellianism and psychopathy because the more determined you are to achieve a certain outcome, the less you care about how you get there, including doing things that would be be considered unethical and harm your competitors, and even explicitly illegal things if you are confident you can get away with it. I've seen this with my zoomer coworkers. I've heard them brag about doing all sorts of fucked up shit. I've seen them screw each other over and sabotage each other. They'll fuck things up on purpose in a way where it looks like another employee did it. It's not even personal, they just know their perceived performance is relative to the performance of others. Competition for hours is getting more and more fierce. All new employees at my job now start part time, you have to "earn" full time hours...which few do. I've been working there for years so I'm one of the privileged ones who gets full time hours, but I'm always looking over my shoulder because these neijuan-brained zoomers are hungry and ruthless as fuck. And keep in mind, I work in fast food, pretty much the lowest paying and least desirable industry in the entire economy to work in. I can't imagine how bad it is with middle class white collar job, but I've heard a lot of stories for sure.
Zoomers in general don't seem to care at all about things like ethics. The outcome is all that matters to them.
This is all downstream from the fact that zoomers grew up with social media and have been dealt a really awful hand economically. Also zoomers are hyperintroverted. They don't seem to form close relationships with other guys like older generations did. They seem perfectly content with doordash, gym, posting on social media, living alone, never going out, and having no friends. The only thing they want added on is a gf. This lack of forming bonds with other males also likely contributes to them seeing all other men as competition that they need to defeat at all costs.
