The song was “Sleep”, which long-time fans may recognize as a rarity that has been circulating for almost 30 years as a Pygmalion-era demo, is an unreleased track by the british shoegaze group Slowdive. What’s less known is that it’s technically a cover, originally by guitarist Christian Savill’s teenage pre-Slowdive band Eternal and was released on their 1990 single Breathe, which is now available on Bandcamp.

In any case, it sounds magical and I find it interesting that the song with the most plays is a somewhat obscure, essentially rough, relatively low-quality demo recording that was never officially released on an album. But then, this song hasn't been officially released and therefore is only easily accessible in one place, so it would naturally have more views on that platform. Unreleased music finds its sanctuary on YouTube, making it the perfect home for such gems.

The comment section is overflowing with reflections from boomers, zoomer females, and normans alike on the importance of cherishing teenage love and embracing the fleeting joys of youth.

"Like That" is, of course, the instantly infamous anthem that features Kendrick Lamar's verse that stirred up conversations everywhere. He spins shots at Drake and J. Cole, referencing their recent collaboration, "First Person Shooter," where Cole celebrates his status as a top-three in hip-hop, but Kendrick smashes that statement and boldly declares, "Fuck the big three, it's just big me."

But yes, an all-around strong performance from Kendrick in terms of delivery, vocal inflexions, and lyricism. Future's contribution is serviceable, but really, what I like about this track is the throwback, clunky, groovy, dirty south style instrumental with these squacking synth horn leads that are so odd but simultaneously so memorable. Kendrick taking aim at his “Big Three” counterparts Drake and J. Cole with his scathing guest appearance likely played a role in the track earning the most single-week streams for any song in 2024, and becoming the Compton native’s longest-running No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100.

Once hip-hop's underdog, Kendrick provides the song's showstopping moment, dropping the therapeutic malaise of 2022's Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers in favor of coming directly at aforementioned contemporaries after years of subliminals. Charged with vitriol while delivering an explosive verse, Lamar's appearance feels like an event and another great one at that, as he shows up in a chest-out, no-holds-barred mode on the track.
